A Community Rebuilding After Displacement

Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek (BNA) is a displaced First Nation working to rebuild the community that was destroyed by government and industry over 70 years ago. Once a thriving community of commercial fishermen and trappers on the southeast shores of Lake Nipigon, BNA was devastated by flooding caused by the damming of the Nipigon River in the 1920s. Homes that survived were later destroyed as the Province of Ontario moved to create Black Sands Provincial Park, displacing BNA members across the country. After decades of advocacy, BNA’s traditional lands were finally returned in 2010.

Building a Foundation for the Future

The rebuilding of BNA is not an abstract idea, but an achievable vision. For years, BNA has been laying the groundwork for community development by building a strong administration, expanding health and social supports, and establishing an economic development department focused on employment, training, and long-term partnerships.

Creating Sustainable Economic Growth

At the same time, BNA recognizes that government funding alone will not move redevelopment forward at the pace expected by its Elders and members. As a result, the community has pursued an ambitious path of economic development to generate own-source revenue that supports community growth and sustainability. This revenue is generated through a variety of initiatives, including agreements with hydroelectric and mining proponents, forestry royalties, on- and off-reserve community projects, and strategic partnerships.

Own-source revenue allows the community to advance important projects and cultural initiatives that may not otherwise be possible, while also contributing to large-scale developments where government cost-sharing is required. That is why BNA has pursued economic independence since the 1990s, creating business opportunities and generating own-source revenue to support community priorities, major projects, and cultural revitalization.
